For most of us, a new role in life presents a variety of challenges and some surprises, too. Advice from someone who’s already been there can help get us through the rough spots. In the case of university students, who better than seniors to offer the benefit of their experience?
This week, Feray Nurfer Dadalı, a fourth-year Communication and Design student from Turkey, gives advice as to how this year’s freshmen can make their university lives a bit easier and less complicated.
My first piece of advice would be, “Get to know yourself.” University is the place where you’ll be given the opportunity to find out who you are. You’ll learn how to overcome difficulties by yourself. Don’t expect people to tell you what to do; instead, learn how to push yourself. Say yes to the opportunities that Bilkent is offering you. Try new things. Take classes from different departments. Learn Korean, or how to print on a t-shirt. Dare yourself!
Second, “Make the most of it.” You should also enjoy the fun part of being a university student at Bilkent. Meet a lot of people, go to Spring Fest, join student clubs and definitely apply for an Erasmus/exchange program. I had the best memories and experiences that I could have asked for during my Erasmus stay in Spain.
And most importantly, make education your priority. Be prepared for Bilkent’s challenging but high-quality education. It won’t be easy, but at the end of the journey with all its hardships, you’ll enjoy being rewarded for your hard work.
