For most of us, a new role in life presents a variety of challenges and some surprises, too. Advice from someone who’s already been there can help get us through the rough spots. In the case of university students, who better than seniors to offer the benefit of their experience?
This week, Mehmet Cahit Doğruer, a fourth-year Architecture student, has some words of wisdom for this year’s freshmen.

Q. What advice would you give freshmen about the Bilkent experience?
Bilkent is a wonderful place. Being here has always made me very happy. I believe there are no restrictions at Bilkent. We must take advantage of Bilkent’s opportunities to our own advantage as much as we can. Meeting people is an important opportunity that Bilkent offers, and we must take full advantage of this by meeting as many people as possible. The time I spent with my friends and in student organizations stands out as the most significant thing I can recall.

Q. What’s something students should keep in mind throughout their time at Bilkent?
They need to understand that Bilkent is a step in their lives, in my opinion. We don’t have tons of time here. To truly appreciate university life, it is beneficial to remember that the education and entertainment we receive here prepare us for the next stages of life.

Q. Any tips or tricks to surviving life at Bilkent?
* Keep in mind that you can contact your instructors. They are your friends, and they are here to help you.
* Play sports
* Have a party
* Go outside and have fun; don’t confine yourself to one life.

Q. One word about your experience at Bilkent so far?
Experience.
