For most of us, a new role in life presents a variety of challenges and some surprises, too. Advice from someone who’s already been there can help get us through the rough spots. In the case of university students, who better than seniors to offer the benefit of their experience?
This week, Ali Karanfilci, a fourth-year Management student, gives advice as to how this year’s freshmen can make their university lives a bit easier and less complicated.
When I was in eighth grade, I asked my father if I could leave school and join our family business in agriculture. At that point, I was actually playing a crucial role in my father’s business; I was helping him by maintaining some financial accounts. I had seen how to make money, and I was learning this well; I had quite a bit of money in my pocket, and this was adding to my self-confidence. However, the first thing my father said to me was that I had to complete my university education before becoming a part of his business. He was never against the idea of me working in my village, but he was against the idea of me working there just like the others did. According to him, education would transform my style of thinking and furnish me with better communication and problem-solving skills. For the first time, I realized that education was not for making money, but for improving yourself.
The second reason I give importance to university education is because it helps you understand the rapidly changing world and also teaches you how to adapt to these changes. But before you start understanding the world, you need to know yourself better: your strengths, weaknesses, interests, etc. University life helps you answer many of the questions you have about yourself. The courses in different disciplines, the friends from different cultural and personal backgrounds, the clubs focusing on different activities – these will provide you with enough opportunities to understand yourself in a better way.
And after finding yourself, you will be ready to find the job most suitable for you, the one that will satisfy your intrinsic passion. Once you find that, you will become different and maybe begin to change the world in a good way.
