For most of us, a new role in life presents a variety of challenges and some surprises, too. Advice from someone who’s already been there can help get us through the rough spots. In the case of university students, who better than seniors to offer the benefit of their experience?
This week, Anooshay Khan, a fourth-year Molecular Biology and Genetics student, gives advice as to how this year’s freshmen can make their university lives a bit easier and less complicated.
Thinking about the last four years at Bilkent has brought so many bittersweet memories that I’m already feeling nostalgic. To all the young Bilkenters, I would say, there’s no place like Bilkent, and you’ll soon find it to be like home. The first thing you should keep in mind is to be real. You don’t need to become someone you aren’t just to fit into a crowd. Know your strengths and weaknesses well, and have the confidence to own your ground. College is the best place, I believe, to challenge yourself and come to know yourself better.
Finding good friends is perhaps the most difficult part of university life. Most of us have to make new friends in college, and so, from what I’ve learned, you need to choose well whom to be friends with. This might be taxing in the beginning, but trust me, it’s worth the effort, because I think it’s your friends who can make a great difference in your college life. They’re the ones you’ll get to share most of the unforgettable moments with, so choose them wisely.
Talking about studies, as you may have come to know by now, Bilkent can get really tough sometimes. You can’t leave everything to the last moment and expect to do wonders. Therefore, I suggest you start planning your use of time in advance. Time management is the key to good academic performance. If somehow things don’t work out, don’t panic or stress out, because that will make things worse. Take your time, stay calm and focused, and everything will work out.
We’re all here to study, to achieve our goals, but in the hustle of getting ahead, we mustn’t exhaust ourselves. Take time out to have fun, chat with friends, or indulge in a sport. Make these four years the best time of your life!
