For most of us, a new role in life presents a variety of challenges and some surprises, too. Advice from someone who’s already been there can help get us through the rough spots. In the case of university students, who better than seniors to offer the benefit of their experience?

This week, Elif Şenül, a fourth-year Psychology student, has some words of wisdom for this year’s freshmen.

Q. What advice would you give freshmen about the Bilkent experience?

This is a very good but tough university, and these four years might be quite challenging; however, they’ll also be the best years of your life. Bilkent provides students lots of opportunities with its education programs and social activities. At first, you may feel that coping with Bilkent is hard, but don’t get scared. It’ll get better in time. Just try to learn, develop yourself, and enjoy your life here.

Q. What’s something students should keep in mind throughout their time at Bilkent?

To be honest, regardless of your department, this will be a long and difficult journey for you. Being in a new environment, meeting people from different backgrounds and keeping up with all the classes and course requirements will be hard, and you might feel exhausted from time to time. However, you should never forget that this is a very good school that will give you the chance to eventually achieve your dreams. Therefore, the first thing you should learn is how to plan your time and make working with deadlines a habit so that you can keep up with Bilkent’s tempo. Second, allocate some time to yourself and your friends, and enjoy your college years as much as you can. Bilkent offers numerous options for self-improvement and socializing that you can take advantage of. For example, attend the academic talks that take place throughout the year, use the resources of the library, try to meet people from different departments, participate in club activities, never hesitate to take a step to explore more – and of course, don’t miss Spring Fest!

Q. Any tips or tricks to surviving life at Bilkent?

There are three important things. First of all, don’t be prejudiced or shy, and try to know and enjoy life at Bilkent. Secondly, it’s important to know how to deal with stress; therefore, you should find a way to relax, such as participating in social activities or sports. And finally, even though attendance requirements can be very annoying, attending classes is very important for your education; if you want to do more than just survive, like have a good life, keep attending classes.

Q. One word about your experience at Bilkent so far?

Bittersweet.
