For most of us, a new role in life presents a variety of challenges and some surprises, too. Advice from someone who’s already been there can help get us through the rough spots. In the case of university students, who better than seniors to offer the benefit of their experience?

This week, Ann Abukhalil, a fourth-year Interior Architecture and Environmental Design student, has some words of wisdom for this year’s freshmen.Q. What advice would you give freshmen about the Bilkent experience?

There’s so much that the university can teach you, so let it! Go out, try new things, and meet people of all sorts, because this is the time when the journey of discovering yourself begins. If you can squeeze in some additional courses on subjects besides your major that interest you, do that as well!

Q. What’s something students should keep in mind throughout their time at Bilkent?

Your grades are important, but they’re not everything. Try to balance your relationships with studies, friends, yourself, and don’t forget to check up on your family every once in a while. You might have to lose some sleep sometimes, but it will be worth it!

Q. Any tips or tricks to surviving life at Bilkent?

Try to be as flexible and as adaptable as you can possibly be, and remember that each one of us is different; you can always learn from these differences instead of instantly rejecting/judging them.

Q. One word about your experience at Bilkent so far?

A trampoline.
