For most of us, a new role in life presents a variety of challenges and some surprises, too. Advice from someone who’s already been there can help get us through the rough spots. In the case of university students, who better than seniors to offer the benefit of their experience?

This week, Alperen Yıldırım, a fourth-year Psychology student, has some words of wisdom for this year’s freshmen.Q. What advice would you give freshmen about the Bilkent experience?

Try not to get overwhelmed! Everything may seem incredibly hectic, but don’t panic, you get used to the crazy Bilkent schedule over time. After a while it will become normal and you’ll learn to enjoy it (I hope).

Q. What’s something students should keep in mind throughout their time at Bilkent?

Make every moment count. Even though classes may make it very difficult, you’ll miss every minute of your time at Bilkent. So don’t take any moment for granted; experience your campus life fully.

Q. Any tips or tricks to surviving life at Bilkent?

Take care of your mental health. It’s extremely important that you take care of your mind as well as you take care of your body, because things may become very intense and you should always remind yourself to take a breather. Finals, exams, classes, your social life… all this may overwhelm you, but take time for yourself if you need it; don’t ignore your mental needs.

Q. One word about your experience at Bilkent so far?

Fabulous.
