For most of us, a new role in life presents a variety of challenges and some surprises, too. Advice from someone who’s already been there can help get us through the rough spots. In the case of university students, who better than seniors to offer the benefit of their experience?

This week, Alperen Öziş, a fourth-year Computer Engineering student, has some words of wisdom for this year’s freshmen.

Q. What advice would you give freshmen about the Bilkent experience?
Bilkent is a great place and offers many opportunities. Avoid making the common mistake of keeping your social life in a small box. Talk to people and try new things all the time. Now I have a lot of free time because I will graduate soon (and I only have few classes). I use my time to play tennis, go climbing and get involved in clubs. I wish I had started doing these activities earlier. Go and explore new things.

Q. What’s something students should keep in mind throughout their time at Bilkent?
Bilkent offers many opportunities. Don’t be afraid. Never assume that you’re going to bother someone. Just take action. When there is an event that you want to attend, go without any second thoughts. It is the same for your lessons: take in as much information as you can from your professors. However, be careful not to push yourself too hard. A slight change in your letter grade won’t impact your entire career. Don’t overwhelm yourself.

Q. Any tips or tricks to surviving life at Bilkent?
*Go to Table D’hote Restaurant
*Don’t miss free events (e.g., Sports courses).
*Create or find your own study group in your department. Never forget to improve yourself and give as much as you take.
*Try everything but master one thing.

Q. One word about your experience at Bilkent so far?
Sarcastic.
