Bilkent Etiquette-III: How to Dress for Success
|
You may think that I don’t know what I am talking about this time! How can two opposite actions be the same? Well, let us go step-by-step and then see if I make sense or not.
Not everybody in the world is healthy, wealthy and wise. Some have more than others do and some work harder than others even to maintain a subsistence level livelihood.
As another year draws to its conclusion, it is time to sit and think of what we have done for others and ourselves during the past few months, time for self-assessment, time for evaluation in a way. I hear you ask me, “OK. I’ll do it but I don’t know how!” Well, do not worry; here I am to help you with the kinds of questions you need to ask yourself as you do your annual self-evaluation:
Have you donated any time to help someone without being asked for it?
Have you donated any money to an organization for a good cause?
Have you contributed any material goods for a good cause in the past months?
Do you know what volunteerism means?
Are you a member of a volunteer organization?
Have you done any volunteer work?
Do you know that in 1999, 2.8 billion people lived on less than $2 a day, with 1.2 billion of them surviving on the margins of subsistence with less than $1 a day?
Do you know that misery shared is misery halved and happiness shared is happiness doubled?
Do you appreciate the things you have and give your thanks in a form of charity?
If you said “yes” to all of them, you are a perfect Bilkenter doing the right thing for the right reasons. If you missed one or two you can make up for it immediately; if you are missing more than three, start questioning why you want to have a university education, if you are not going to become a better person?
We are not alone on this earth, and you cannot see the borders between the countries when you look at our planet from space. Helping someone, a child for instance, here in this country or elsewhere, today, may come back to you as a gracious, peace-loving happy grown-up tomorrow. Do not forget, we all share the same world and we all need each other some way or another. Give thanks for a little and you will find a lot. Those who give have all things; those who withhold have nothing; that is, giving is receiving. Think about it!
