Bilkent Clubs Offer A Variety of Activities

a108050.bmp (38178 bytes)Here at Bilkent, more than 90 clubs contribute to student social life. Although each one is different, clubs have several goals in common: to contribute to social life on campus, to build an environment where members can make friends, to develop members’ organizational and communication skills, and to contribute to the creation of a “Bilkent spirit.” Clubs, of course, also work in harmony and sometimes organize events together. This term, as always, a variety of club activities will be available for us. Bilkent News talked to a few of these clubs about their aims and plans.
We all know about DOST (Doğa Sporları Topluluğu), one of the oldest and most active clubs at Bilkent. Established in 1989 by a group of students that included mountaineers Tunç Fındık (ELIT/ 93’) and Nasuh Mahruki (MAN/92’), it has been going strong ever since. DOST’s activities range from rock-climbing and mountaineering to rafting and hiking. DOST is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, members are planning to climb five mountains in Turkey, including Ağrı, during the year and also to climb abroad. DOST will be organizing a camp on Işıkdağı on March 5, and on March 26 there will be a trekking tour to Çamkoru. Also, for those who want to learn climbing, there will be a 3-day workshop program from April 1-3 in Sivrihisar. The annual tour to Ihlara Vadisi will take place on April 24.
Some Bilkent clubs organize activities relating to students’ fields of study or future careers. For example, the Mühendislik Topluluğu Personal Development Seminar series is getting started this week. The seminars will be held on February 16-17-18 and 22-23-24-25 and are targeted at developing personal skills. The topics are “How to Find a Job via the Internet,” “Individual Career Planning,” “Job Interview Techniques,” “Leadership,” “NNLP,” “Body Language” and a very special seminar, “Avucunuzdaki Kelebek,” by Ahmet Şerif İzgören, a personal development expert. Participants who attend at least three of these sessions will receive a certificate. All of the seminars will be held in the C-Block Auditorium at 12:30 p.m. For detailed information, you can email mtbilkent@gmail.com
Prospective entrepreneurs at Bilkent can choose to join the Genç Girişimciler Kulübü. Last semester, the club arranged a certificate program in cooperation with the METU Genç Girişimciler Topluluğu. They are planning to repeat the event this term. Also, the club is currently working on bringing representatives of Turkey’s best-known companies to campus to introduce their organizations to Bilkent students.
