Faces on Campus

NBILKENT'S FEMALE SECURITY OFFICER
Do you think that all Bilkent security officers are men, and that everyone who does this job has to be a tough guy? You're wrong, because Bilkent has a female officer with a pretty face and a kind manner. If you're a student in FMPA or have had a chance to stop by there, you'll recognize her. Mine Sönmez is another one of Bilkent's valued employees. She started work here as a security officer in 1997 upon the referral of her mother, who also works at Bilkent. During the past eight years, she has married another Bilkent employee and had a child. On the job, she has watched many students growing up from childhood to graduation.
The atmosphere of FMPA is different from that of the other faculties. Students don't just come for lectures and leave-they spend most of their time there, practicing. Being there from early in the morning to late at night makes them close to each other, like a family. Officer Sönmez says that since she too spends most of her time at FMPA, she's like a mother to the students and takes care of them. As a result of this, she remembers every detail about them, and they share everything like close friends. One of the many good things about artists is that they are so sensitive and emotional-she says they never forget her birthday, and shared her happiness at the time of her wedding and the birth of her child.
As you might guess, it's not always easy for a woman to work in the field of security. Sönmez is well-trained for her job, and knows how to handle a crisis situation. Luckily, she has so far never needed to use force on the job. The only difficulty she faces is communicating with the international staff and students. For instance, when they want to say “good morning” in Turkish, they sometimes say “good afternoon” instead. Officer Sönmez now knows a few words in Russian. So, even the communication problem has its positive side, because it gives her the chance to learn foreign languages a little.
To sum it all up, she says she is very happy to work in a place full of talented artists. Having met her husband as well as many friends here, Bilkent has brought her good fortune in life. We wish her many more happy years…
