So, what ever happened to Ricky Martin? The
screams of teenage girls still ring in our ears: "Rickyyyyyyyyyy-take
me!" "One hit wonder" is definitely not the right terminology to
describe him-perhaps "a couple of albums wonder" would be more correct.
Yet, I still believe he's a classic in himself - and classics don't die.
It wasn't his musical failure that doomed his career. "Shake Your
Bonbon" is surely a timeless masterpiece, and my personal second
favorite after the unforgettable "Ice Ice Baby." His fatal mistake was
to announce his sexual preferences, which cost him the 98.97 percent of
his fans that consisted of adolescent girls bursting with hormones.
Keeping the rest was a challenge, too: it was a tough competition
between him and Cher. And Cher seems to have won.
So, I'm asking all of you to go out and buy a Ricky Martin CD today, for
old times' sake, because - poor Ricky - "Nobody Wants to be Lonely."
