Goodbye and hi,
We're now in the middle of our finals. These days, books seem bigger, and time goes very
fast while we're studying. This year's end is more meaningful for me than previous ones,
because most of my friends are graduating, and this opens a deep, endless gap in my heart.
I feel like the university will be very different next year without them.
As for them, they've completed a milestone in their lives and are now at a new starting
point, as all of the other Bilkent graduates have been before them. In two weeks they'll
open their eyes to real life, but with their experiences at Bilkent still fresh in their
minds. There will be days when they'll celebrate their salvation from these tiring and
very challenging years but will also, in a part of their minds, know that this time passed
too quickly. They'll start to say, "I miss being at the faculty of...," or,
"I miss my dorm." Because, as we all know, until we lose something, we don't
appreciate its true value.
So, dear friends, as you start your new life, let it be filled with all good things and
and good fortune. Keep your hearts calm and your minds open to differences. Always be
patient and cherish the opportunity to grow older beside your loved ones. Don't forget
that if one day you want to turn back and have a look at your former life, Bilkent will
still be in its usual place. Good luck.
For the students who will be returning, have a nice vacation and renew your energy,
because you'll need it for next year. I'll be looking for your comments and ideas for this
column. So, fill your minds with interesting thoughts, and then let's share them, because
it's your column.
As a starting point, I'll be writing about some well-known cities that also have
mysterious, forgotten or little-known aspects. Sometimes, I'll be writing book reviews. I
also hope to share some information about cooking, and some recipes. Overall, what I would
like to do is offer some useful cultural and philosophical points of view to you, the
readers. I'm always open to your comments in order to develop and enrich my column, which
will be called "Did You Know This?"
In addition, I'll be doing the Bilkent News puzzle. As a new columnist, I'd like to say hi
to everyone who will be back at Bilkent next year, and also to this year's graduating
students, who will be starting their struggle with real life.
My last few words will be about myself. My name is Sıla Türkü Kural. I'll be a
fourth-year student in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department. I'm from
İzmir, and graduated from Saint Joseph. My parents are both engineers, and I have a
younger sister. I'm interesting in cooking, reading and discovering new things.
So, have a good summer vacation and have lots of fun--hope to see you next year.
