Having walked from the Black Sea (Akçakoca) to the Mediterranean,
participants from last June's Coast-to-Coast Trek have a new goal: starting a permanent
hiking club at Bilkent (which would exist in addition to the already well-established
outdoor activities club DOST).
The original group of participants in the Coast-to-Coast Trek included 12 students and an
instructor, Ben Claasz Coockson from the Department of Archeology. They started their
journey on the Black Sea coast on June 1. By the time they reached the Mediterranean shore
near Antalya 28 days later, blisters and tired legs had taken their toll: the group had
dwindled to four students and the instructor, plus an additional two trekkers who had
joined the walk after it began.
Now, the group has already started training for next summer's project, a walk through the
archaeological sites and interesting areas of Cappadocia beyond the usual tourist route.
This year they are planning to take weekly backpacking walks of about 15 kilometers,
monthly two-day walks with overnight camping in tents, and a midwinter camping excursion.
Anyone interested in joining future walks can visit the website www.treking.org.
