Pioneers in Optoelectronics and Photonics Visit Bilkent, Speak at FOTONIK 2005

At the conference, Dr. Miller presented an overview of the current research work and future technology in the area of joining optics to electronics, highlighting the superior performance that optics provides for electronics. Dr. Harris talked about the history and physics of new optoelectronic materials, which he half-jokingly referred to as "recycled" materials, and their engineering to make new, useful optoelectronic devices.

Bilkent Assistant Professor Hilmi Volkan Demir stated that the conference was a great success, including as it did the participation of two giants in the field, Drs. Miller and Harris, as well as that of the successful Turkish entrepreneur, Dr. Ömür Sezerman, along with the presentation of close to 30 papers in one day.

Both professors also attended the FOTONYK 2005 conference reception hosted by the dean of the Science Faculty, Professor Hasan Erten, and Mrs. Erten. The Stanford professors, hosted by conference organizers Professors Ekmel Özbay and Hilmi Volkan Demir, also visited the research facilities at the Bilkent Advanced Research Laboratory and NANOTAM.

After learning about the history and current scientific activities of Bilkent University from Professor Erten and other faculty members, Drs. Miller and Harris stated that they were impressed with Bilkent's mission and the success of its efforts in promoting excellence in research and teaching.
