Want to Learn Japanese?

Students interested in learning Japanese can take the Japanese language credit courses being offered on both the Main and East Campuses. The Basic 1 (80 111 161) and Intermediate 1 (80 111 261) Japanese courses are
open as elective courses to students from all departments.

The Bilkent News interviewed instructor Saeke Ohashi about the courses. When asked about the difficulties of learning Japanese, Ms. Ohashi answered, "Japanese is not difficult. For Turkish people in particular, it's an easy and enjoyable language to learn because of the grammatical similarity between Turkish and Japanese. Learning the Japanese writing system is also really enjoyable. You feel like you're drawing pictures." She added, "The pronunciation is very simple. One thing to remember is that there is no 'L' sound in Japanese. So, for example, 'Bilkent' becomes 'Birukento.'"

"I think learning the language of a Far Eastern country is valuable for students. Japan is geographically very far from Turkey, but the languages and traditional culture of the two countries are surprisingly similar. Interestingly, learning Turkish has recently become popular among members of the younger generation in Japan." Ms. Ohashi invites all interested students to take her courses and learn about Japan by learning Japanese.
