Philosophy Department Holds Essay Competition

PHIL 241 (Social and Political Philosophy I) is a course taught by the Department of Philosophy to students from several departments. While the course is in the tradition of "Great Books," it also emphasizes analytical thinking skills and is heavily essay-based.

Last semester, for the first time, a "Best Essay Competition" was held for the students of the course, with the faculty members of the Department of Philosophy serving as jurors. LAW student Simge Haznedarošlu was declared the winner for her essay entitled "Is contemplative life the true happiness?" Simge will receive a set of books as a small token in recognition of her accomplishment.

Simge's achievement is all the more meaningful in the light of two facts: (i) the course was taught by nine instructors to approximately 400 students in 19 sections, and (ii) each instructor nominated just a single student from the sections he or she taught.

The competition will be held again this semester in conjunction with
PHIL 242, the continuation of the aforementioned course.
