Bilkent Student Top Scorer in Hockey Match

When asked how she got started playing hockey, Esra said she started at the age of 14 in Canada. Elif, who plays right defense wing, began to play four years ago.

Ice hockey has a history that goes as far back as the 16th century. Dutch paintings from the period depict people playing the game on frozen canals. However, the first true ice hockey match took place in 1875 in Montreal, Canada. As far as women's hockey is concerned, the first international match was held in 1916, but women’s games did not became part of the Olympics until 1998.

Played with five players on each team, with a game lasting for three twenty-minute periods, ice hockey is one of the most competitive, fast-moving sports in the world. Because of the potential for injury during play, players have to wear protective gear such as helmets, shoulder pads and special ice hockey skates. They skate while carrying hockey sticks to shoot the “puck”, a hard black rubber disc, into the opponents’ goal net on either side of the ice rink.
