This year, for the first time, Bilkent's
Management and Economics Community (MEC) participated in the European
Union Youth Exchange Program. MEC was partnered with the E-fact Student
Club at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. The exchange consists of
each group hosting their counterparts in their own country for a week.
Twenty-one MEC members went to Tilburg on February 5, and on April 16,
21 E-fact members will visit Turkey.
MEC's week-long Holland
trip, which began in Tilburg, included visits to Amsterdam and the Hague,
and also to Brussels in neighboring Belgium. MEC members had the
opportunity to meet with Tilburg University faculty members, Dutch
parliamentarian Toine Manders and Ministry of Finance officials, as well
as to brainstorm with their fellow students. Topics discussed included
controversial issues like European integration and racism.
The MEC members also
visited the European Parliament, Anne Frank's house, the offices of the
management consultancy company Twynstra Gudde, and Madurodam, a
miniature city of replicated buildings. MEC is planning a similar
itinerary of academic and social activities for the Dutch students'
visit to Turkey in April.
