Students on probation
will be able to register for a limited number of new courses and will
have to repeat some of the courses in which they received grades lower
than C. Like students with unsatisfactory standing, students on
probation will be able to choose which courses to repeat.
Under the new rules,
students with a CGPA of less than 1.20 will be dismissed from their
programs, beginning in their fourth semester in the program. Another
change approved by the Senate is the abolition of the D- grade; the
lowest non-failing grade will be D.
These new academic rules
and regulations will become effective on September 1, 2006, after being
approved by the Board of Trustees. However, students who are currently
registered in their academic programs (i.e., current students except
those who are in the English Language Preparatory Program or the School
of Applied Languages Basic French Section Program) will be exempt from
the new course limitations for one year, and from the dismissal clause
for two years. This means that in the Fall and Spring semesters of the
2006-2007 academic year, current students will register for courses as
usual. The course limitations under the new system will be applied to
these students beginning in the Fall 2007-2008 semester.
The university worked on
revising the academic rules and regulations for more than a year. Rector
Ali Doğramacı appointed a committee headed by Vice Rector Erol Arkun to
investigate the shortcomings of the current rules and to suggest
alternative systems. The head of the Student Council served as a member
of this committee. The committee presented its findings and suggestions
to larger working groups consisting of deans and directors over the
course of a number of meetings. The final proposal was discussed at
length at a Senate meeting and put to a vote. The decision was unanimous.
