“Intelligent” Fabrics of the Future:
Wearable Optoelectronics and Thermal Sensors

In 2004, they reported a novel fabrication method (Nature, October 14), which allows fabrication of flexible, low cost, large-area fiber-based sensing devices. “The importance of this new fabrication technique has recently been recognized by other researchers," said Dr. Bayındır.

"In the March 17 issue of Science, scientists from the UK reported the development of fiber-based transistors and nanowires using a similar method.”

The research team's most recent paper on thermal sensing fiber devices appeared in the leading materials science journal Advanced Materials last week. Dr. Bayındır stated that there are plans to construct facilities in the NNRC building in order to fabricate fibers, fiber-based sensors and nanofibers for medical, military and industrial applications. He added that the use of nanotechnology is a way for Turkey's textile industry to compete with other countries.
