Chairman of World Technology Leader Intel Comes to Bilkent

Intel introduced the microprocessor in 1971 and today remains the world's leading supplier of microprocessors. The company ranks 53rd on the Fortune 500 list, and has 294 offices and manufacturing facilities around the globe.

Recently, Intel launched the Intel Initiative for Digital Transformation in the Middle East and Turkey. This multi-tiered scheme will enable Intel to work more closely with the governments of the region to help address long-term needs for skills development and knowledge transfer. With only 12% PC penetration in Turkey, the country is lagging behind the nations that have recently joined the EU. Intel has been working for years on a number of education initiatives to support the growth of the IT sector in Turkey. The Initiative for Digital Transformation will bring all of these activities together under one umbrella, along with new programs in the areas of education and knowledge transfer.

Craig Barrett, who holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science from Stanford University, joined Intel Corporation in 1974 as a technology development manager. He rose through the company's executive ranks and became Intel's fourth president in 1997, its chief executive officer in 1998 and chairman of the board in May 2005.

In his capacity as chairman of Intel, Barrett is currently traveling to many countries around the world. He is visiting Ankara to discuss Intel's digital transformation initiative. During the course of his trip, Bilkent will be the only university where he will meet with the students.

The panel discussion to be moderated by Murat Birsel at the Bilkent Concert Hall will include two other prominent Turkish journalists as panelists along with Craig Barrett as the featured guest panelist. All students are invited to attend this important presentation. Entrance to the event requires an invitation that can be obtained from the stands of the Operational Research Club, the Engineering Society and the Management and Economy Club that will be set up on campus during "Intel and Technology Week," November 14-18. The stands will also provide information about the latest technology from Intel.
