Leaving a Traffic Legacy

Professor Żhsan Sabuncuošlu, Chairman of the Industrial Engineering Department and the Head of the Traffic Committee of Bilkent University for the past ten years, handed over his responsibilities to Nermin Fenmen, Chair of the Department of Accounting with the start of the 2006-2007 academic year.

The Bilkent University Traffic Committee was the first such committee to be established in Turkey. Ten years ago, a team of faculty, staff and students from different departments with diverse backgrounds and experiences were chosen to improve the traffic situation on campus and to encourage all Bilkenters to be courteous and conscientious drivers. A few of the Traffic Committee firsts include:

  • Radar detection of speeding vehicles

  • Parking lots for the physically impaired

  • A computer based traffic information system

  • Including traffic rules in the university's book of instructions and regulations

  • Forming the Bilkent Young Traffic team made up of student volunteers

  • Offering traffic psychology courses

  • Organization of several seminars and courses on traffic during each academic year and during the orientation programs for newcomers

  • Organization of contests and activities to increase traffic consciousness
Mailings to 10,000 parents to encourage support for their children obeying traffic rules

  • Construction changes around campus including roads, crossroads, signalizations, and traffic signs

In short, under Prof. Sabuncuošlu's leadership, Bilkent has become the leader in establishing a successful traffic model for Turkey and the Traffic Committee now shares this model with other foundations.
