WHAT'S ON IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS
At our last meeting two weeks ago, I shared some information about the activities going on
in our city. I hope that some of you were inspired and ventured out to some of these
events I mentioned.
Let's have a look at what is happening this week. Two events, which are underway as you
read this column, are the Ankara Jazz Festival and the Efes Pilsen Blues Festival. This
Friday and Saturday the 17th Blues Festival will take place, as before at the Hilton and
student tickets are 20 YTL. The festivities will begin at 7:30 p.m. and Buckwheat Zydeco,
Larry Garner & Band and Michael Powers will be on the scene. We went to the 15th
festival and had a blast. So if you want to spend a fun evening out, have some beer with
your friends on a bench and enjoy blues music, don't miss it. (To find a bench we went one
hour before the starting time).
And for those who just want to listen to some Jazz, there is also a great opportunity
coming up: The Ankara Jazz Festival. All of the activities will be held at or near the
university. Performing at METU KKM Kemal Kurdaş Hall: on the 22nd will be the Charlie
Haden Liberation Music Orchestra and on the 24th Duo Antonello Salis-Michele Rabbia will
play. On the 23rd the Claude Bolling Trio will take the stage at the Bilkent University
Concert Hall. And on the 25th the Lica Cecato Trio: Brazillian Jazzpects will play in the
Hacettepe University M Hall. If you are interested in any of these concerts, you may find
more information from Biletix and book your tickets.
For those who like to plan a week in advance, let's take a look at what is going on at the
beginning of December. On December 1st at MEB Şura Hall, there will be a concert for
peace "Barış için Kuzey-Güney Müzisyenleri Buluşması." Eleni Karaindrou
and the Hacettepe University Symphony Orchestra along with several musicians from Greece
including Vangelis Christopoulos, Konstantinos Raptis, Socratis Sinopoulos, Aristotle
Dimitriadis and Natalia Michailidou will fill the heart of Ankara with marvellous
classical music.
The following day, December 2nd, there is a different kind of show being held at the
Hilton, Burhan Öçal & Funky C will shake Ankara. Also on December 2nd, for those who
miss(ed) the 80's, White Lion, a favorite 80s band will be playing at Saklıkent. Finally
on the 5th of December, if you want to hear a different beat, METU KKM will host
percussionist Mısırlı Ahmet.
I hope you will find time to enjoy a few of these activities during your midterms. And I
wish you good luck on your midterms and do not forget to go out and enjoy some of the live
music in Ankara in the next two weeks.
