Chair Appointments |
Two new administrative appointments mark the beginning of the 2007 spring semester. Asst.
Prof. Edward Kohn of the Department of History has been appointed acting chair of the
Department of American Culture and Literature and Asst. Prof. Oya Pancarošlu has been
appointed acting chair of the Department of Archeology and History of Art.
Oya Pancarošlu started teaching as an assistant professor in the Department of
Archaeology and Art History in September 2006. A specialist in the history of medieval
Islamic arts and architecture, Dr. Pancarošlu teaches both undergraduate and graduate
level courses covering the main aspects of Islamic art history from the seventh century
onward. Her own research focuses primarily on the figural arts of the twelfth and
thirteenth centuries in the Persianate world. She has most recently completed a catalogue
of medieval Islamic ceramics for an exhibition to be opened at the Art Institute of
Chicago in March. Asst. Prof. Oya Pancarošlu has taken over the position of acting chair
from Asst. Prof. Charles Gates, who succeeded Marie-Henriette Gates who chaired the
department from 2000-2006.
Before coming to Bilkent on a full-time basis in 2003, Asst. Prof. Kohn taught American
History at McGill University in Montréal.
In addition to publishing many papers, articles and a book, This Kindred People:
Canadian-American Relations and the Anglo-Saxon Idea, 1895-1903, he is the recipient of
the Robert Vogel Award in 2002 from the History Students' Association recognizing
"excellence in teaching." His research interests include Theodore Roosevelt and
New York. Currently Dr. Kohn is teaching classes on American politics and foreign policy.
He is the father of an eight-month old girl, Alara.
Asst. Prof. Kohn replaces Asst. Prof. Dennis Bryson, who is currently on sabbatical at the
University of California at Berkeley and who served as acting chair from 2004 to 2007.
