The Bilkent Animals' Friends Society, the first university club to protect animals' rights
in Turkey, visited the 100 Yýl Animal Shelter in Balgat on Saturday, February 24. They
made a small contribution of food for the dogs with the bread, milk, and dry dog food. The
devoted authorities and staff at the shelter, which is currently housing about 7,000 dogs,
gave the group information about the general conditions and problems of the place. The
main problems of the shelter, where there is constant classical music on air, include lack
of space for the dogs because there are too few adoptions taking place. However, the
inadequacy of food despite all the efforts (such as those of other volunteers and
visitors) is another important problem for the shelter. Why there are no foundations
regularly donating food to the shelter (although even simple bread works as dog food) is
inexplicable. Because it is unrealistic to expect solutions to all of the problems from
the municipalities the club’s aim is to increase public awareness for the animals' right
to live. The Bilkent Animals' Friends Society is looking forward to your suggestions and
contributions.
