Previously on Lost...
This may sound familiar to many of you: now it has become my nightmare that I am going to
be addicted to a TV show. I am talking about Lost, the TV series that many people are
crazy about. I have tried to not become involved in the hysteria. There are places I have
been, where people constantly talked about the show and I desperately tried to steer the
conversation in a new direction. But I saw that there was nowhere to hide. I realized I
should watch the show in order to understand what everyone is talking about: Jack, Sawyer,
Kate, the merit of Kate's beauty, how Charlie seems to be doing and so on. New episodes of
Lost with Turkish subtitles appear three hours after it is broadcast in America making it
easy to keep up with the story.
Lost surrounded us and I admit, I surrendered and bought a DVD of the first season. I
watched with prejudice and vigilance so that I would not surrender to the addiction, after
seeing people go mad for the show. In a way, I am watching like a third eye, criticizing
and looking for the answers of "Why?" But I am not looking for an explanation
for the events in Lost but for an explanation of why Lost is so addictive. Like a soldier,
I work for humanity. I only watch 3-4 episodes in one day; no more. People have said I am
in danger of losing my grip on reality. And it's true that two times I have seen my
friends and myself in Lost, and two or three times I have seen Lost in my dreams. While my
consciousness says I am not addicted to the show, my unconsciousness welcomes Lost.
Still, I am trying to finish the first season as people tell me that I am going to see
unbelievable things very soon. These people also tell me that there are many signs in
every episode; they say they freeze scenes and talk about them constantly. Unbelievable!
It is not really enjoyable to watch it that way because the show is thrilling, full of
surprises and makes me want to punch the pillows.
The theme I have observed in Lost, is that the characters who were in that plane, have
very complicated and very miserable lives and they are like looking for something good; a
way out of their problems. Then, this accident is in fact, a miracle. It may all be an
illusion; they are playing a simulation game in the plane. And together they all fall into
paradise. The one who dies in the game has fallen asleep during the flight! No one
knows…
Leaving behind the three seasons, people still keep watching it. Let's underline this
sentence: Lost is full of questions and misery! I have not seen any event that has a
solution, and no questions that have answers. All the illogical and unexpected things come
and shock people. When dissatisfaction meets with curiosity, everything can make you
addicted! This can be the motto of my life, in order to have fun and keep myself alive!
In my "Previous" column I wrote that misery in life keeps us awake; if you had
all the answers, you would not be that willing to live. Anyway, I hope the writers will
perfectly and logically tie up all these events into a solution. Otherwise, a polar bear
on the island will be recorded in television history as the most stupid and senseless
thing that has ever been seen in a TV series. Last but not least, I keep saying that I can
give up Lost, whenever I want, but that reminds me of what smokers say. It is a real
addiction that bears both hate and love at the same time.
