The
curtains opened November 23 on the Greek tragedian Euripides' "The Trojan
Women," presented by senior students in the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts.
Despite being written almost 2,500 years ago, the play is still as striking as the day it
was conceived.
It is considered to be a commentary on the capture of the Aegean
island of Melos by the Athenians in 415 BC. It begins with the gods, Athena and Poseidon,
discussing ways to punish the Greek armies who condoned the rape of Cassandra by Ajax the
Lesser in Athena's temple. What follows is the story of how the woman of Troy dealt with
the aftermath of their city being sacked and their husbands killed.
This interpretation of the classic, guided by acclaimed actor and director Erdal
Küçükkömürcü, features magnificent acting that is sure to impress! On November 30,
"The Trojan Women" will be presented as part of the 12th International Ankara
Theater Festival. December 7th and 14th, you can experience the show on campus.
