Cultural Exploration at Center of Upcoming Symposium

culturalThe Bilkent Department of History, in association with the American Studies Association of Turkey, and Western Kentucky University (USA), will host the "African American/ Africana Studies Symposium," February 26 to 28.

There will be academic seminars as well as dancing, singing, poetry, story-telling, and visual art related to African American and Africana culture.


Featured events are:

Exhibition: "The Art of Dr. Najjar Abdul Mussawir," Southern Illinois University, FADA Art Gallery

"Opening Ceremonies," including "Call of the Drums," by Dr. Tanya Price from the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University, 9 a.m., Wednesday, February 27, Mithat Çoruh Auditorium

"Race in America and the Presidential Campaign of Barack Obama," by Dr. Saundra Ardrey from Western Kentucky University, 10:45 a.m., Wednesday February 27, Mithat Çoruh Auditorium

"The African American Influence on American Popular Dance, and Dance Performance," by Dr. Clifton Brown, Western Kentucky University, 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 27, Mithat Çoruh Auditorium

"The African American Oral Tradition," selections by Ms. Okomfo Enyo Akusa Bakeman Gyeaboa, poet, and story-telling by Mr. Charles Holt, Broadway Actor, 9 a.m., Thursday February 28, C-Block Auditorium
