World Poverty and Global Justice

At the invitation of the Bilkent University Seminar Series on "Polity, Political Theory and International Relations," Prof. Thomas Pogge will visit Bilkent between February 28 and March 1. Pogge is Professor of Political Science at Columbia University, Professorial Fellow at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the Australian National University, and Research Director at the Centre for the Study of Mind in Nature at the University of Oslo. He is among the world's most influential contemporary scholars in Political Philosophy and Global Justice, and the author of "World Poverty and Human Rights: Cosmopolitan Responsibilities and Reforms," (Polity Press, 2002) and "John Rawls: His Life and Theory of Justice," (Oxford University Press, 2007).

On Friday, February 29 at 2:30 p.m., Prof. Pogge will give a talk on "World Poverty: Explanations and Responsibilities," in the FEASS C-Block Auditorium. On Saturday March 1, two symposia will be arranged related to Prof. Pogge's work. They are titled "Do Rawls's Two Theories of Justice Fit Together?" and "Intellectual Property Rights and Access to Essential Medicines." While the first symposium addresses the different theories of justice developed by John Rawls for national and world society respectively, the second is related to a team effort headed by Prof. Pogge seeking to develop "a complement to the pharmaceutical patent regime that would improve access to advanced medicines for the poor worldwide."
