Bilkent Professor is Selected As One of the
Top-10 Scientists in Turkey

ozbay.jpg (8292 bytes)Prof. Ekmel Özbay of the Physics and Electrical and Electronics Engineering Departments was recently selected as one of the top-10 researchers in Turkey by Elsevier -a 300-year old scientific publishing company of several international research journals and books. To determine the list of finalists, Elsevier compared contributions made by scientists working in Turkish institutions. Each was evaluated on their number of publications from over the last 5 and 10 years; the number of citations these publications had received (excluding self-citations); and the scientific impact of these articles (h-index). Prof. Ekmel Özbay is the only Bilkent professor to be selected to the top-10 Turkish Scientist List.

The awards were given during a gala dinner held on October 18, 2007 at the Hilton Hotel in Ankara. Several members of the Turkish Education Council (YÖK), university rectors, vice-rectors and university library directors were present during the award ceremony. Bilkent University Library Director, Dr. David E. Thornton, presented the "SCOPUS-Elsevier Turkey Research Awards" plaque to Prof. Özbay for his "Contributions to Physics and Nanotechnology."

Prof. Dr. Ekmel Özbay is the founding director of Bilkent University's Nanotechnology Research Center. His research topics include nanoelectronic and nanophotonic devices, nanostructured metamaterials, nanophotonic crystals and epitaxial growth of GaN based nanomaterials. Along with his research group members, he has published 136 Bilkent-addressed SCI papers (32 SCI papers in 2007) since joining Bilkent University. These papers have received more than 2100 citations (~500 citations in 2007). These statistics currently represent the best scientific performance among Bilkent professors.
