The Snowberries of Autumn

müge tekinHow to overcome it?

Writing the very first article of my life for Bilkent News is so exciting. However, the first step is rather difficult to take, writing about the scariest of diseases. For many of us, even the word 'cancer' seems so dreadful. However, since the risk of becoming ill with cancer increases more and more, I want to talk a little about it. Don't be afraid, I won't deal with it in so much detail as to depress you, but rather will write about something that has fascinated me so much.

Today, millions of people die from cancer. However, there are a many who have had cancer in the past who are now sound as a bell. Where does the significant difference come from then? Were the ones who are alive now fortunate that the type of cancer they had was easier to treat than others, or that the time of the diagnose was early enough? Or, could there be another reason for this?

At the beginning of last semester, I became acquainted with the name Louise L. Hay and her book “The Magic of Positive Power.” Recently dubbed as "the closest thing to a living saint," she generally deals with loving  and healing oneself in her books. Through her healing techniques and positive philosophy, millions have learned how to create more of what they want in their lives, including wellness of body, mind and spirit. Just out of curiosity, while searching for a biography of the writer on the internet as I do whenever reading a book, I found out that Ms. Hay had cancer once before. I find it so unbelievable after having seen each worsening step of the disease take over a loved one, inspite of healing methods like chemotherapy and radiotherapy administered in a well-known and well-respected hospital. He passed away only 3 months after having learned that he had lung cancer. Such a quick and unexpected death! What had Ms. Hay done that was so special?

In 1978 she was diagnosed with cervical cancer and believed it was caused by her unwillingness to let go of the resentment over her childhood sexual abuse and rape. At first she found it hard to accept her diagnosis. But, she was bright, funny, and never let it get in the way of living which must have been very difficult, I suppose. Refusing medical treatment, Ms. Hay decided to put her philosophies into practice and developed an intensive program of diet, exercise, prayer, affirmations and good therapy through her mental powers. Within 6 months she claimed that she was completely healed of cancer. She declared that there was no doctor who could confirm her story, but swore that it was true. I hope she did rid herself of cancer. Even if not, I believe her healing methods are worth remembering since she is still alive 31 years after her diagnoses.

Moreover, I have a message for her:

Dear Ms. Hay,
May you live long enough to accomplish all your desires, to help all those who want to change their lives but do not have the courage...

I hope you all have a nice week!
