Hakuna Matata

özlem erdemHere it is, a summary of everything that has been going on in my head for the last while:
• Beyoğlu in İstanbul was great on Valentine’s Day. Although it was raining more than at the equator, listening to the “orchestra in red”moving along the İstiklal while eating famous Beyoğlu chocolate was fantastic. I’m not one of the romantic ones, but the key word is chocolate!
• By the way, we found a perfect café in İstiklal called Markiz, a very famous patisserie that authors like Orhan Veli and Mina Urgan frequented in the past. It was closed for some time until Robert’s Coffee bought the place. For a month or so their prices have been very low, especially compared to Bilkent. My friend calculated that if he was to eat everything on the menu, he would pay only 37 lira! Drinking a cappuccino costs 2.5 lira and for a special tiramisu from Italy, adding an extra 2.5 would be enough. Eating Napoliten is again 2.5, and the most expensive meal is the chicken with mushrooms that costs 5 lira. All of the nostalgia is included. I strongly recommend going to have a meal at Markiz if you are İstanbul.
• I started to read the biography of Freud and now have a strong desire to learn hypnosis. To me, it seems that the only way to see what might be troubling a person is to get them into a trance. It allows people to say what is happening in their head, without limitations. Sometimes, I wish that I can blame some of the things I say on being in a hypnotic state, and therefore not having control, but I can’t fool myself. I am not in trance.
•“Lost” mania is still going strong and it is has been on my mind for a while. I really am wondering how the scriptwriters will wrap-up the series and connect all of the undefined pieces together. I just can’t stop myself from reading about the conspiracy theories, and it’s tiring. I just wish I could see the last episode today!
• On long bus rides, I hate it when people think that their seats should be laid back as far as possible. The passenger sitting behind them, (yes, that is me!) has to take the journey with someone practically sleeping on their lap. How cool!
• I am already excited about this year’s Springfest. This can be due to the fact that it will be my last as an undergraduate. It is a strange feeling. I want the festival to come immediately, but on the other hand, I don’t want the year to end so quickly. It’s an excitement mixed with melancholy - just like eating a bar of chocolate. I want to eat it up, but at the same time I never want it to finish.
May the light be with you until next time!
