This week, on Thursday, March 26, Marie-Henriette Gates, associate professor in Bilkent's Archaeology and History of Art department, will deliver second Library Lunchtime Lecture for this semester, entitled “Exploring an Ancient Port in Mediterranean Turkey: The Kinet Höyük Excavations (Hatay).”
In her talk, Dr. Gates will explain in general how archaeologists study material remains in order to understand the cultural and socio-economic lives of people in the past. She will then illustrate this by describing the ongoing “dig” at Kinet Höyük in Hatay province. Seventeen seasons of fieldwork on its Bronze Age, Iron Age, Hellenistic and Medieval phases show that this harbor, despite its size and location, reflects dominant economic patterns in the eastern Mediterranean with surprising accuracy. The Kinet project indicates that, in antiquity, maritime economic systems caused cultural transformations at a more intensive level than occurred for land-based networks, and that small harbors participated in these changes as actively as their larger coastal partners. If you are interested in this fascinating subject and would like to learn more about Turkey's distant past, do stop by the Library Art Gallery on Thursday, from 12:40 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. to hear Dr. Gates' talk. The lecture will be in English and refreshments will be supplied.
The search for Bilkent Library's new logo is now over! During a four-week competition, many submissions were received from Bilkent students, all of a very high standard. A short-list of the four best designs was drawn up last week and the winning entry has now been selected from among these. We are happy to announce that the winning designer is Emre Bakýr, a fourth-year student in the Graphic Design Department, and his logo is displayed below. The Bilkent University Library would like to thank all students for their highly imaginative and creative designs, and congratulate Emre.
