For the first time in the history of Bilkent's Tourism and Hotel Management Department, a team of students participated in a culinary event. Umut Eren Hacıimamağaoğlu, Çağla Selçuk, Gökceçiçek Öztürk, Nilufer S. Akarsu, Aizhan Akhmetova and Gülen Elçioğlu, advised by Master Chef Henk C. Kuchlein, prepared an eight course meal for twelve guests at the Chef 8 competition.
The event is organized by the Ankara chapter of the Türkiye Aşçılar Federasyonu. It was held at Bilkent for the first time in 2006. Due to its popularity, however, it outgrew Bilkent's facilities and is now held at the Ankara Sheraton Convention Centre.
Bilkent's was the only team that had no professional experience. Every Saturday morning, during the month of April, team members practiced and refined their dishes and presentation. There was a lot of curiosity about the team which drew other competitors and attendees to observe them preparing. When service time came, the team was all ready. At the end of the meal a guest approached, commenting that “I was very lucky this night because I was sitting at your table. All the dishes were great. Thanks for everything.” showing that their efforts had been appreciated.
