Visiting the exhibition showcasing the work of second year graphic students from the Faculty of Design and Architecture was a thrilling experience. The colorful posters and "famous couples" theme were simply exciting. I had the chance to talk to one of the students at the opening, Ali Sezgin, who told me about the exhibition in general.
The posters on display were made for the "Jazz Festival" and "Ankara Film Festival" and included the winning entries. There are other themes, like "countries" which reflected the special features of countries, the "famous couples" concept, and a "little people" project, where small figures were taken to different places through out campus and photographed. There are also a variety of typographical works to be seen.
I asked Ali about his work and he explained that he made several posters. The one that caught my attention was his "famous couples" poster featuring graphic novel characters Hellboy and Liz Sherman. While explaining how he made the poster he said he first thought of using coal to represent Liz Sherman and a fire extinguisher for Hellboy. "Liz Sherman is a pyrokinetic (fire ability) character. She can make anything catch fire. Hellboy, on the other hand, is resistant to fire. He can't be burned. They are actually perfect for each other yet it is an impossible love. The coal was not strong enough to represent Liz Sherman's character so I had to start a small fire and picture that. In order to start the small fire I lit up a match box and took several photos, around 30 frames, to catch that nice fire effect. I then processed the image and turned it into a poster."
Overall this year's exhibition is full of excitement! The colorful posters are very attractive and it was clear that a lot of effort was made to create a good show.
