 The second annual "Horizons in Molecular Biology and Genetics" symposium, organized and presented by Bilkent University's Molecular Biology and Genetics Society (BilGenT) was held at Bilkent on May 11 and 12. BilGenT hosted their seven guests, Deniz Atasoy (USA), Attila Gacser (Hungary), Ertuğrul Kılıç (Turkey), Tiago F. Outeiro (Portugal), Irina Stancheva (UK), Gergely Szakacs (Hungary) and Işık Yuluğ (Turkey), with the aim of building a bridge between students and scientists from a variety of fields and countries. The event, attended by more than 250 people from all over Turkey, increased awareness about cutting edge research in epigenetics, neuroscience, cancer and microbiology. Students took the opportunity to meet with pioneering scientists and learn about advanced studies in their fields of interest to better help them make choices about their future careers.
The organization committee took the speakers on a tour of the city, visiting Anıtkabir, Atakule and Kocatepe Mosque. During social activities, they learned about Turkish culture and experienced traditional tastes.
Looking to the future, BilGenT is dedicated to following ongoing research in order to play a role in the understanding of biology by university students and keep the focus of the genetics field on Bilkent.
