The Mechanical Engineering Department has been formally approved by YOK, the Higher Education Council, and plans to admit 80 undergraduate students in its inaugural year along with MS and PhD students to its graduate programs.
Professor Adnan Akay has been appointed as the Chairman of the Department. Professor Akay has been "Lord Professor of Mechanical Engineering" and was previously head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Professor Akay has also been the Director of theCivil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation Division of the US National Science Foundation (NSF). The Department already has three full-time faculty members and several affiliated faculty from other departments who have mechanical engineering backgrounds. The Department plans to increase the size of the Mechanical Engineering faculty to 15 in the next two to three years. The new Department's curriculum introduces several new concepts and approaches to mechanical engineering education.
