The Bilkent Judges are ready for the new season, according to Team Captain Çağrı. They are in a restructuring period, given the new coaches, former Judges players Erkan Akçabay and Koray İltuş, and the fact that nearly half of the team is formed by new players selected from a draft in September. However, the captain believes in the squad, and describes the new environment as "magical." They act like a team not only on the field, but also in their social life.
This year, the tournament that the Judges take part in will see some slight changes. There will still be two regional groups consisting of four teams, but each team will play extra matches against two teams from the other region. Much like the Judges, almost all teams are in a reformation period. Despite this, player retention is higher at other universities because their studies aren't as intense. This means more experienced players for the opposition. Moreover, there are two separate leagues, one for universities, and another for clubs. The Judges play in the university league, but most other teams are in both, so they get more field time. This causes an inequality and is pushing the Judges to step up their game.
The team started preparing August 15 at a special training camp. For two weeks, players lived in the dorms, and had three training sessions per day, which helped create a good bond within the team. When asked about the goal for this season, Çağrı answered in full confidence: May 28. It's the date of the finals and it's clear they are only concentrating on the championship.
A student club has been created once more to support the Judges. The board of the new American Football club will be responsible for details like clothing, equipment and other team needs for match days. Add in the support of fans at games and this should be a championship year!
Games start next week, with the complete schedule being announced soon in Bilkent News.
