Opinions

alev dešim3D horror films seem to be very popular these days; there was My Bloody Valentine and now The Final Destination 4. Both are from the same genre, are presented in 3D, and have classical plots.

It's been three years since Final Destination 3, and to be honest, I wasn't expecting a come back. The plot does not change: A group of friends must cope with visions of death that predict how Fate will kill them one by one. It is tense struggle to escape their destiny. The first time I watched the series I was somewhat interested, but after the sequel, I grew bored being able to predict the same suspense devices and plot twists. Albeit, the new 3D version was successful in showing off these techniques. The flying screwdriver made people jump off their seats, the crash scene was pretty well done, and of course you have the gruesome body parts coming right at you. So, yes, it was entertaining, but still fails to give an interesting story. The characters remain typical and predictable.

First there is the protagonist who sees the future, his girlfriend and the girl's best friend and her boyfriend. Guess who dies first? It's the same old story all over again with very little change in plot. Character development is basically nonexistent. The characters are flat, and because of that the whole film turns out to be a visual effects screening. Some may argue that, this is the aim of the producers, which is valid, but when you compare it to other horror films like Psycho or The Shinning, you will understand what I mean. The difference is so huge that it's impossible to go unnoticed.

I personally expect the final to be the best part of 3D effects. The visuals should climax by then, but the ending was not impressive at all. It went to slow motion and jumped to graphics!

I personally did not find Final Destination 4 that thrilling. There is a lot of effort in the effects,  its craftsmanship is professional, but the plot kills it all. If you want to spend some good time watching 3D, it might serve your purposes. But if you are looking for a nice horror film, I suggest you choose a different one…
