David Cedric Bennette, an FAE instructor, was awarded a National Press poetry prize by the South African Arts and Culture Council. The award carries a prize of about 1500 USD or 10 000 South African rand. His collection, “Low Tide on the Reef,” draws connections between the marine life left in rock pools at the ebb of the tide and the ongoing challenges we face in life.
Bennette had never entered a competition himself. He never felt his poems were good enough. The collection of twelve poems was submitted by his mother who thought they had some merit.
“Most of the poems I have written get thrown away when I clean out my apartment,” he admitted. “I never seem to like them very much. So maybe this success will help me take myself more seriously as a poet.”
