Berfin Aksu, Ýlayda Zeynep Köksal and Aybek Alimov of the Music Preparatory School at the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, received awards from the "14th Remember Enescu Violin Competition" in memory of the violin virtuoso Enescu in Romania.
Berfin Aksu, received the first place prize and two special prizes, Ýlayda Zeynep Köksal and Aybek Alimov both ranked third in the contest. Aksu won "The Best Enescu Interpretation Award" and "Constantin Dragoi" special award. The three continue their violin education with violin instructor Muhammedjan Turdiev at the Bilkent University Faculty of Music and Performing Arts.
Thirty-six musicians participated in the competition in four different age categories. All musicians were required to play one of Enescu's compositions in each category.
Eleven-year-old Berfin Aksu, in category A, played the last moment of Paganini's concerto "La Campanella" and Mendellsohn's violin concerto first movement in the final.
Fourteen-year-old Ýlayda Zeynep Köksal, in category B, played Sarasate's "Introduction and Tarantella" and Lalo's "Symphony" in the final.
Nineteen-year-old Aybek Alimov, in category D, played Maurice Ravel's "Tzigane" and the last moment of Tchaikovsky's D Major Concerto for violin in the final.
The three young musicians all started playing violin at the age of six here at Bilkent.
Berfin Aksu says, "My future dream is to become a violin instructor one day."
For Aybek Alimov, winning third place was no small feat. "Being third in the contest was a surprise for me," he said. "I look up to Suna Kan and Ayla Erduran."
And Ýlayda Zeynep Köksal admits, "Actually, I wasn’t expecting this result. And also states that “My future goal is to become a good soloist and instructor at the same time."
