The 16th METU Alpar Kılınç Go Tournament took place on 19-20 December at METU. Hüsrev Aksüt (IE/V) won first place among 68 participants around the country. He achieved a winning streak of five out of five games.
This tournament is one of the three major tournaments held by the Turkish Go Association. It was organized in memory of Alpar Kılınç, who introduced this game to Turkey in the late 1980s. He passed away due to a tragic traffic accident in 1995.
Go is an oriental strategic board game which originated more than 4,000 years ago. It combines beauty and intellectual challenge and game appeals to many kinds of minds, from musicians, artists and philosophers, to mathematicians, engineers, and even options traders. Like the East's martial arts, Go can teach concentration, flexibility, and discipline. The game rewards patience and balance over aggression and greed. Each person's style of play reflects their personality. In other words, the Go board serves as a mirror of the player's inner world.
There is an active Go Club at Bilkent that meets weekly in the Student Council building. There is no need to have any kind of pre-knowledge about Go to participate as rules are always introduced to new-comers.
