Nasuh Mahruki, founder of Arama Kurtarma Derneši, Search and Rescue Organization (AKUT), and a 1992 graduate of Bilkent's management department, visited Bilkent to give a talk as part of the Career Center's Personal Development sessions. Mahruki is also a professional mountain climber, writer, photographer and motivational speaker.
In the seminar last Friday, Mahruki delivered a two-hour presentation and answered audience questions. Mahruki pointed out the keys to personal development by drawing examples from his own life. Session attendees heard first-hand accounts of personal moments in Mahruki's life. He shared videos and photographs of himself climbing mountains and helping people in need.
Mahruki emphasized the need to recognize yourself, to believe in yourself and to make sure-footed efforts toward your target. Mahruki, who believes that success is not a coincidence, drew attention to important points about personal development and achieving success while mentioning some parts from his soon-to-be published book. He also acknowledged that with the right approach and methods, success can be achieved, but the first condition for success is to realistically recognize the human self. To be able to do that we all have to discover our potential because we all have much to contribute. So the question is: what is required for realizing our potential?
"Planning, motivation, commitment, faith, courage, imagination, and a sense of responsibility are needed to discover your potential and achieve true success," Mahruki said.
With his effective, colorful and informing presentation Mahruki drew great applause from the audience. He also added that Turkish people are intelligent and as long as a true role model is presented to them, they will discover their true potential and do great work on the world stage.
In the future, Mahruki plans to write new books and embark on new adventures. He is always looking push himself one step further. When a student asked him where he would want to see AKUT in the future, he replied, "That it was up to the Turkish people and their support."
