On Wednesday, March 3, a group of physicians, nurses and staff from the Ministry of Health and the non-governmental organization SUVAK will be on hand in the atrium of the economics' building to provide information on cancer and how to quit smoking . The aim of this event is to raise awareness of the risks of cancer, and to educate students on prevention.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Turkey, and the number of incidents is rising at an alarming rate. Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer in Turkey, with an annual increase of 3-5% each year. The major cause of lung cancer remains smoking, a serious issue for Turkey since approximately 33% of its population smokes. However, smoking not only increases the chances of developing lung cancer, but also for cancers of the larynx, urinary bladder, cervix, pharynx and oral cavity. Effective tobacco control prevents 40,000 lung cancer cases annually in Turkey, or in more direct terms, two out of two cancer patients would then never develop cancer.
The event on March 3rd will be multi-faceted, with one part as a cancer discussion by Dr. Nejat Özgül, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Health's Cancer Control Department. The other part will involve nurses and physicians who will provide guidance on how to properly do breast cancer self-examinations. They will also be available to answer any questions, and will be handing out pamphlets on cancer prevention and smoking cessation.
Please attend the event in the atrium of the Economics' building from 11:30 a.m.-2:30p.m. The talk by Dr. Özgül will take place in the 3rd floor auditorium of Building-C from 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided on a first come, first serve basis. |
