A Royal Treatment in Scotland

mun

The Bilkent Model UN Society labored through a labyrinth of diplomacy to tackle some of the most elaborate issues in world politics at ScotMUN 2010.

ScotMUN, held in at the picturesque University of Edinburgh, brings together young minds from some of Europe's most reputed universities for a weekend of debate, lobbying and deal brokering. This year's conference attracted delegates from more than ten countries and featured an impressive roster of attendees with schools like Cambridge University, Oxford University, the University of St. Andrews, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Bologna.

Bilkenters won three best delegate awards from the seven committees that attended. The Society's Deputy Secretaries-General for Academic Affairs, Selim Sazak (PHIL/III) and Eda Emil (ECON/I) won two awards.

Sazak represented Colombia in the Disarmament and Security Committee while Emil wrestled her way through a largely unfriendly audience in a global pandemic scenario as the United States of America. Arianna Catalano (IR/III) proved her skills in winning UNESCO's best delegate award as the representative of Bangladesh. In her first-ever experience in an MUN conference, Catalano clinched an award in what proved to be a moment of pride for Bilkent.

Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations with thousands of active participants all over the world. MUNers gather in numerous conferences throughout the year to speak up and stand up against some of the most alarming crises the world faces today from poverty to armed conflicts. At the same time young Model UN delegates meet like-minded people from many corners of the world. They discussed a multitude of issues, from the restriction of small arms and light weaponry, to freedom of the press and a last-minute diplomatic crisis that brought the United States and Brazil to the brink of war.

Bilkent Model UN meets every Wednesday afternoon. Anyone interested is welcome to join.
