Ahmet Alp Balkan (CS/II) has been accepted to Google's Summer of Code program this year. The Google Summer of Code is an annual global program that encourages students to develop various code for open source and free software projects during their summer holiday.
Balkan's project is to design an installer which enables Windows users to easily install Pardus Linux (a Turkish national operating system powered by TÜBÝTAK/UEKAE).
It is the third year in a row that a Bilkent University computer science student has been accepted to this program. Ezgi Çiçek (CS/III) and Onur Küçüktunç (CS/M.S.) participated in Summer of Code 2009 and 2008, respectively.
The program comes directly from Google's founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. As of 2010, Google is helping 150 open source software projects with student programmers worldwide.
