A Closer Look at an Angora Cup Football Game

The mighty men of Bilkent FC played their way to a third place finish in this weekend's Angora Cup. The tournament featured six different universities playing each other over a four-day period.

Bilkent opened proceedings with an unfortunate 4-2 loss to neighboring METU. A few dubious refereeing decisions soured the game for the brave Bilkent players, but even those could not hide the quality of their football. Özgür Çetin had a goal and an assist, directing a ferocious free kick onto the right foot of captain Bora Demirel who lobbed a delicious volley over the stranded goalkeeper. Çetin went on to score a mercurial strike near the touchline that prompted widespread comparisons to Roberto Carlos.

In their second game, Bilkent FC left no doubt about their abilities, easily dispatching Özyeğin University with a 5-1 victory. Finnish master Jarkko Ketola earned man of the match honors by scoring two goals in the rout. Soykan Suiçmez and Ümit Caferi lived up to their “Showtime Kanka” nicknames by playing some superfluous one touch football. Mert Müderrisoğlu, Emre Uzun, Cemil Kaya, and Ahmet Müftuoğlu earned their stripes at the back by playing hard, tight defense. Berkin Bakan demonstrated his ability to dance past defenders while Gökhan Ateş and Tahsin Önder hooked up beautifully all over the field.

On Sunday, Bilkent FC rounded out the tournament with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Atılım University. Alper Diş sacrificed his body with an early foot injury, but the team recovered wonderfully to grind out the victory. Bilkent students should make sure to come out and support their football heroes at the upcoming league games.
