Müge TekinI am Leaving, Who Wants to Join Bilkent News Family?

Once in my ‘Production and Information Systems’ course, the class was full with 45 or more students. There was an empty seat near me. One student came nearly five minutes late to class. Alper Hoca said, “You can sit here, near Müge.” I was surprised. What could make me surprised? The weird thing in that sentence was my name; Alper Hoca had learned my name but how? Having a visual memory, I understand him better. Certainly, our department is considerably large. Then, during the break he said I didn't write this week. It is biweekly, I told him. I understood then, the way he had learned my name was from Bilkent News. So being a columnist is useful in making your name known!

Joking apart, what did I gain from writing articles every two weeks? It was relaxing, it was the time I spent recognizing myself, my abilities and my inadequacies - the time that I was considering events in an unbiased way. I mean, it worked like a mirror for me. The things that I can't say when I'm face to face with people sometimes appeared on paper. I think, it is strange that while writing, I don't care much what other people think of me. I suppose my friends have also gotten to know me better. Actually, it all started when I was reading other columnists and became impressed with their work. I was looking for anything that included literature.  So it was that! Overall, it has been a great experience for me. But this is unfortunately my last chance to write here.

Certainly at the first place the biggest thanks go to my "twin," the matchless company of whom helped me re-appreciate life like a newborn.  I'd also like to express my gratefulness to my teachers who encouraged me to continue writing when they mention my pieces at certain times.  Thanks also go to the Bilkent News team - especially Hande Seçkin Onat and Nil Bero- for their warm hearted and pleased manners. And not to forget my friends who read my columns and sometimes even criticized. This was crucial for me to think over my ideas.

Those who are graduating this year understand where I'm at right now. I mean, you want to know what you will be doing, where you will be in not much more than three months time, but it is all uncertain except for a few lucky people.  When I came to Bilkent four years ago, for me it seemed like four years would be so long.  Now at the end of it, I think: If only I had spent such a short time in a more productive manner. Then why should I stop? Life is lying ahead of me... Take care!
