Thirty prominent scholars from eleven countries - all the bordering countries of the Black Sea, France, England, and the United States - met in Sinop, the first time this area has hosted an international gathering of this kind.
The International Symposium "Sinope, The Results of Fifteen Years of Research" was sponsored by Bilkent University and was organized by Assoc. Prof. Dominique Kassab Tezgör, from the Department of Fine Arts, who has been the scientific director of the Turco-French excavations in Sinop. The symposium's purpose was to gather the latest works dedicated to Sinop, a city that had been a cultural and commercial center of the Black Sea region in ancient times.
Museum visits and archeological site tours were organized, along with educational lectures. Sinop Governor Mr. Mustafa Hakan Güvençer and Mayor Baki Ergül hosted the reception for symposium participants.
This event has been financed by the Company Geocell and TÜBÝTAK. The results will be published in a special issue of the well-known review Ancient Civilizations from Scythia to Siberia. All the information about the Symposium has been posted on the website created by Mr. Mariusz Sladczyk, instructor in the Department of Graphic Design: www. sinope.bilkent.edu.tr.
